Our lake water testing is done at the University of Rhode Island by the URI Watershed Watch group headed by Elizabeth Herron. Because we do our own water sampling and delivery, our costs are reasonably low and we are able to perform weekly testing.
Once a week, usually on a Tuesday morning, a volunteer from VAIL samples lakewater at the beach dock and delivers it to URI. The entire process takes about 45 minutes and we are always looking for volunteers so please reach out to the board is you are able to help.
The test is for Enterococci, a bacteria that lives in the intestings of warm blooded animals, including humans. Elevated levels of enterococci in water indicate the possibility of contamination. RIHealth swimming criteria is no more than 60 enterococci per 100ml.
